Freedom of information law & access to government data
Informations-freiheitsrecht & Zugang zu staatlichen Daten
According to the Freedom of Information Act (IFG), every person has the right to access official information. We enforce this right for you. Whether it's the Chancellor's lobbying appointments or the meal plans at the local school cafeteria, the administration and government should be transparent and accountable. Access to information, which often has to be fought for, empowers citizens to participate in politics and public discourse and to exercise their democratic rights in an informed and critical manner.
In addition to federal and state freedom of information laws, there are various special laws that you can use for your research. These include the Environmental Information Act, the Consumer Information Act, and federal and state archive laws. Journalists can also invoke press law rights to information, which we assert in summary proceedings. We enforce the parliamentary right to ask questions on behalf of members of parliament.
Public authorities are also obliged to make government data freely available (open data). We fight for our clients to ensure that the state fulfills this obligation. The data made available is used by data journalists for their work, but also by companies to build databases or train software. The various open data laws at EU, federal, and state level form the legal framework.
We support you in obtaining data access, information, or file inspection. We advise you on submitting requests under the Freedom of Information Act or on the use of data and represent you before the authorities. Our clients are citizens, journalists, NGOs, scientists, and companies. We build on years of experience in dealing with authorities and in court. This includes negotiations with government agencies, summary proceedings, and strategic lawsuits up to the Federal Administrative Court, the Federal Constitutional Court, or the European Court of Human Rights.
