Philipp Schönberger is a solicitor specialising in public law, with a focus on climate and environmental protection law, freedom of information law, and the protection of fundamental and human rights.
Since 2022, he has been part of the legal team at FragDenStaat, a project of the Open Knowledge Foundation e.V. From 2022 to 2026, he also worked as a legal officer at Green Legal Impact e.V., where he provided legal advice to environmental associations, lawyers and environmental activists.
Philipp Schönberger began his academic career with a Bachelor's degree in International Relations (B.A.) at TU Dresden, followed by law studies at Humboldt University of Berlin. His legal clerkship took him to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, and two law firms specialising in environmental law in Hamburg and Berlin. He also completed the Critical Legal Training at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR). In 2025, as a Fellow of the Re:Constitution Programme for the Rule of Law and Democracy, he undertook a research stay on the criminalisation of climate protest at UPF Barcelona.
Philipp Schönberger works in German, English and Spanish. He is a member of Green Legal Impact and the Republican Lawyers' Association (Republikanischer Anwältinnen- und Anwälteverein) and a founding member of Offene Tore e.V. From 2019 to 2021, he coordinated a legal aid project for asylum seekers on Samos and has since successfully represented numerous people before the European Court of Human Rights.
